The Relocation of the Mule Barn Camp
2014 Update: Here's the story of the relocation of the Mule Barn Camp from the Mule Barn at Fort Worden to the Jefferson County Fairgrounds...I got a call from the Fort Worden park director, Brian Hageman, informing me that our reservation for the Mule Barn has been cancelled! It all has to do with the park leasing out the land and buildings to the FWPDA, who takes over on May 1, 2014. According to Brian, the Mule Barn is going to be used for equipment storage rather than camping. He said that there was no alternative for us within the park and I would have to make other arrangements!
But the good news is, that I was able to secure a patch of grassy ground at the fairgrounds for us to occupy! That grassy ground comes with a 30' x 60' covered structure with a cement floor, restrooms with showers, and picnic tables. Like the Mule Barn, there is some limited electricity for charging your phones, potable water, garbage collection and a place to wash your dishes. In addition, there are four shower stalls in each bathroom (no tokens needed!) and flush toilets! Also, there is NO extra charge for parking your car! Late jamming is allowed. Your dogs are welcome. But, they will have to be on a leash at all times. The fairgrounds are about half a mile from Fort Worden's west gate.
The Mule Barn Camp is an alternative camping spot for those who don't have any other choice such as opting for the dorms (which can be quite expensive) or camping in the Fort Worden campground (which is usually full).
